The Senior School involves, instructs, and inspires our students in Grade 6 to 12 to learn, lead, and succeed. We achieve this with the support of a caring, inclusive learning environment, a dedicated, passionate and talented faculty, and the delivery of a world class curriculum.
We are proud to offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities to promote the growth of character and resiliency with all our students, such as the provision of cultural, creative, sporting and leadership activities that develop key qualities such as confidence, communication, leadership, mentoring, service, and vocational skills. We want our students to develop a love of learning, a desire to succeed and a respect and compassion for others – not just for now, but also throughout their lives.
The encouragement to excel on multiple levels promotes independence, and a growth mindset in all our students that has enormous influence on their future success. This becomes evident each year as our graduates accept offers to study at prestigious universities right across Canada, USA, and the UK. And of our graduates, empowered and enabled by their achievements here, well over 95% study at their university of choice.
The Southpointe community is a pillar of strength and support for all, comprised of students, faculty and staff, parents, alumni and friends, and the well-being of every member is a priority.
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP): Grades 6 to 9
Southpointe Academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) MYP school. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high-quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.**
“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”IB Mission Statement
Designed for students aged 11-16, the MYP develops internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The MYP provides a framework of academic challenge and holistic education that enhances the British Columbia curriculum through engaging and personalized learning. The MYP fosters the social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills that help students learn how to learn in order to succeed in and beyond the classroom.
The academic program includes the eight subject groups of the MYP: Language and Literature (English), Language Acquisition (French/Spanish), Individuals and Societies (Social Studies), Sciences, Mathematics, Design, Physical and Health Ed. and the Arts (Visual Art, Band, Choir, Drama). The MYP culminates in grade 9 with the community project. The community project provides an opportunity for students to collaborate and pursue service learning. The project encourages and enables students to participate in a self-directed inquiry, generate new insights, demonstrate skills, attitudes and knowledge, communicate effectively, demonstrate responsible action and appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

Graduation Programme: Grades 10 to 12
Southpointe Academy challenges students to think innovatively, preparing them for a rapidly changing world hungry for innovation. Our rigorous academic programme delves beyond the expectations of the British Columbia curriculum to equip our future graduates with the independent, creative, critical and collaborative tools that well-rounded scholars require today. The enhanced and enriched nature of all our courses celebrates the responsibility of keen inquiry married to intellectual curiosity. We do not ask students to simply take a formula or a procedure and regurgitate it in different contexts. We encourage them to wrestle with underlying concepts and see how complex ideas function. Their curiosity spans classrooms, stages, laboratories, and playing fields.
The Graduation Programme builds upon the strengths of MYP where the primary pedagogy has been focused on ‘how to learn’ rather than ‘what they learn’, and so is dominated by enquiry based on big ideas, and requiring critical and creative thinking skills. Transdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving in MYP becomes a focus of the AP Capstone Diploma Programme, a world class innovative programme, which support our students in developing the analytic, research, problem-solving, and communication skills that top-class universities covet.
Consistent with our school vision, our passionate and dedicated faculty provoke curiosity, and inspire learning for life empowering our students to pursue their passions. Our structured curriculum facilitates analysis, fostering problem-solving, and strengthening crucial communication skills. We provide students an array of rich but rigorous course offerings tailored to individual strengths and interests, but also allowing our graduates the opportunity to meet entry requirements for their chosen post-secondary courses of study. While all courses are enhanced by means of increased teaching time and small class sizes, we also offer the opportunity for students to select enriched or accelerated courses. Enriched courses may offer students the opportunity to delve into concepts, and develop knowledge not required in a ministry prescribed course. An enriched course may also be one that covers components of pre-AP material in preparation for a full AP course. An accelerated course would allow strong and motivated learners the opportunity to complete an additional grade level of work during the same year.
A Southpointe graduate departs ready to take their place at a top university, armed with a firm understanding of the rigours of a post-secondary education. Through the Advanced Placement (AP) programme, we offer twelve courses across the disciplines of social science, mathematics, and science, enabling our students to refine their time management and study skills. Our students consistently achieve outstanding AP results leading to a proportion of fine scholars every year being awarded the coveted AP Scholar, and National AP Scholar level. Over the past decade, our students consistently win acceptance to the university and programme of their first choice.
A preparation for life is a focus of our well-rounded Graduation Programme where students experience, on top of their academic endeavours, an extensive array of co-curricular, and extra-curricular opportunities, including the arts, athletics, community service and experiential learning. Our students are engaged as local and global learners through trips that take them from Vancouver Island to Europe and Asia. Southpointe graduates have not only developed the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to succeed at the most selective post-secondary institutions, they have the global awareness, compassion and motivation to make a difference in the world.
AP Capstone Program
AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that helps you stand out in the college admission process by developing the critical skills needed to succeed in college and in life. Two new courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — allow you to immerse yourself in topics that matter to you while developing the analytic, research, problem-solving, and communication skills that colleges seek in their applicants. This challenging program helps you deepen your passion for learning, gives you greater confidence in your academic skills, and provides a broader perspective on the world.
Students typically take AP Seminar in the Grade 10 or 11, followed by AP Research. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research Exams and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma. This signifies outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. Alternatively, the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, signifying attainment of college-level academic and research skills, is awarded for scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research Exams only.
