Middle School (MYP)
Southpointe Academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) MYP school. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high-quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.
Designed for students aged 11-16, the MYP develops internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The MYP provides a framework of academic challenge and holistic education that enhances the British Columbia curriculum through engaging and personalized learning. The MYP fosters the social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills that help students learn how to learn in order to succeed in and beyond the classroom.
The academic program includes the eight subject groups of the MYP: Language and Literature (English), Language Acquisition (French/Spanish), Individuals and Societies (Social Studies), Sciences, Mathematics, Design, Physical and Health Ed. and the Arts (Visual Art, Band, Choir, Drama). The MYP culminates in grade 9 with the community project. The community project provides an opportunity for students to collaborate and pursue service learning. The project encourages and enables students to participate in a self-directed inquiry, generate new insights, demonstrate skills, attitudes and knowledge, communicate effectively, demonstrate responsible action and appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.
