Education is… the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.
                    – G.K. Chesterton

I have always liked Chesterton’s quote. Its simple elegance connotes the fundamental importance of education in the lives of our children and of our broader society. As I reflect back on my twenty-five years and counting in education, and as I embark on the next phase in my career here at Southpointe Academy, I invariably return to what it means to teach. I subscribe to education philosopher Thomas Sergiovanni’s notion that teaching is a moral act. It is an act of social good to teach another human being, to help them become more knowledgeable, to learn new skills, to understand themselves and the world around them.

It is my privilege and honour to be joining Southpointe Academy as Head of School. When I visited the School last year, I was struck by its strong sense of community, perhaps most visibly evident in the warm relationships between teachers and students. Southpointe has reached an exciting time in its growth and development. It has many strengths and has achieved several milestones in its relatively young history – a beautiful, modern facility; a talented teaching staff; a supportive community of parents; and a wonderful locale with a growing constituency. Equally important are the strong guiding statements about what the School stands for in its mission, vision and values. These form the bedrock of its community and culture, the foundation on which high quality teaching and learning are laid, and the call to deliver a holistic education so that its students will make a positive difference in the world.

The School’s mission to involve, instruct, and inspire our students to learn, lead, and succeed will serve to constantly inform our decisions and guide our course moving forward. It forms the basis of a covenantal relationship between parents and the School to deliver an education that serves the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of our students.

I look forward to working with all stakeholders to realise the vision of the School to its fullest extent possible. I look forward to instantiating Southpointe as a leading school in British Columbia, Canada, and in the global network of international academic institutions.

Southpointe is a school of reputational excellence, and a place of learning that lives out its tradition of being one school, one heart.
