Southpointe Academy is expanding and enriching its curricular and co-curricular offerings for students and families with additional specialist classrooms and amenities. Southpointe will be able to offer more courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12 as the only secular International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum School south of the Fraser River, and enrich the strength of its athletics, arts, outdoor education and service-learning programs. The expansion will also provide more families in Delta with the option of sending their children to an independent school without taking the bus to Vancouver. The growth of Southpointe will serve local families' needs, enhance the local economy and enrich the overall community development of South Delta.

Our expansion campus is designed to feature 26 new classrooms, including science labs, art, multi-media and music studios, collaboration hubs, a fitness centre and a double gymnasium. With over 70,000 square feet of academic space being built, Southpointe Academy will be able to accommodate up to 850 students. The new building will also offer additional world-leading programs that foster creative, critical, and collaborative thinking among students.

Southpointe Academy is proud to be working once again with Kevin Hanvey, the Vice President and Lead Architect from Omicron, on the design and construction of the new building. Mr. Hanvey and Omicron previously collaborated with the school to design and build the current main campus, which opened in January 2012. The school is confident that this partnership will ensure the new building is complementary to the surrounding area, functional and visually attractive, offering an optimal learning environment for students.

Why is Southpointe growing?

Southpointe Academy is expanding in order to enrich its curricular and co-curricular offerings for students and families with additional courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The expansion will enrich the strength of Southpointe’s athletics, arts, outdoor education and service-learning programs.
Enrolment has grown from 540 to 710, and we expect a further 150-190 students over the next 5-7 years, with over 40% of those students and families being from Delta.

What is being proposed?

Construction of a new building, located behind the existing school on land owned by Southpointe Academy under the Tsawwassen Independent School Society (TISS).
Six stories, approximately 70,000 sq. ft., with a height variance from 71 feet to 110 feet.
Southpointe Academy will maintain its existing parking with additional requirements accommodated through cooperation with South Delta Baptist Church (SDBC).

Does the land need to be rezoned?

Southpointe’s new building is being proposed on school grounds and does not require additional land.
No zoning or bylaw changes are required as the land is already zoned for a school building.
Southpointe is requesting a variance on height to permit the required space to be built in a single building.
The new structure will be located behind the existing school, with little impact to 56th Street and no shadowing impact on any buildings.

How will the growth of Southpointe support the community?

The expansion will provide more families in Delta with the option of sending their children to an independent school without taking the bus to Vancouver.
The growth of Southpointe will serve local families' needs, stimulate the local economy and create more job opportunities for teachers, staff, and other support personnel.
In addition to its current Summer Programme offering and facility rentals with user groups, Southpointe will be better able to serve the needs of the local community by making additional spaces in its new expansion campus, such as the double gym, available for use.
A world class independent school located in South Delta enhances the overall community and brings positive benefits, including attracting young families to the area, stimulating the local economy, enhancing the local tax base, and providing more amenities and resources for use by all members of the community.

What are the plans to manage traffic?

The design of the new expansion campus retains current parking areas and improves access for parents during drop-off and pick-up times.
Southpointe operates 8 full-size buses with an active student ridership, thereby reducing the number of vehicles on its site; the School plans to increase its bus fleet over the next 5 years.
Southpointe is working in cooperation with the South Delta Baptist Church to accommodate parking needs on-site; its development plan meets all municipal requirements for parking.
Southpointe is working with the City to initiate additional measures to further reduce traffic, including lengthening the left turn lane from 56th Street onto 19th Avenue.
The School will also consider additional steps to create efficiencies with traffic, such as staggering the start times for different divisions in the school, incentivizing carpooling amongst its staff, and deploying a significant number of traffic safety personnel to ensure an optimal traffic flow during drop-off and pick-up times.
